Sony launches the VAIO S in the US

It was not that long ago when the Sony 13.3 inch Huron River based VAIO S laptop was launched in Europe. But now it seems that the Sony feel that the time is right for the same laptop to be offered in the US, all be it as pre-order at the moment with the actual machine becoming fully available towards the end of the month.
This is a good time for the launch, as they will quickly latching onto the heels of the recently announced new MacBook Air from Apple. But will the Vaio S be a good match for the Apple, from first glance it compares favourably, so what about when we look at it a little bit closer?

So far from what we can see the Sony Vaio S offers the buyer the 13.3 inch high definition display with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, it is powered by a second generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, with up to 8 GB of RAM. There is a choice of either one HDD or one SSD unit; the graphics come courtesy of the Radeon HD 6630M 1 GB graphics card, a DVD or Blu-ray drive.

Connectivity come from an 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a 3G wireless connection is optional, there is also a handy high definition web camera and two of the new super speed USB 3.0 ports. When come to the battery the Vaio offers a standard battery that claims up to seven hours of usage, however alternatively there is a sheet battery, which is supposed to be able to boost usage up to fifteen hours!

Now there are a couple things here that stand out, first all is the Vaio’s screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels against the 1440 x 900 pixels on the Apple. But where the Vaio S wins is in the battery department, the basic battery promises over seven and half hours of use, which effectively is all day plus it can be extended to around fifteen hours with the sheet battery. Whereas the Apple offers up seven hours of use, which going to be less than stated.
Prices start at around $970, but after configuration and optional extras, the price could easily creep up to $1,500 or more!
